Utrecht University Conference

After attending the Stallion Show in Leeuwarden, NL, Foundation team members traveled to Utrecht University for a Friesian conference with Dr. Willem Back. Upon arrival we were given a tour of Utrecht’s equine veterinary facilities. With 500,000 horses in the Netherlands, Utrecht is the center of expertise and point of reference for veterinary issues for the country and increasingly, for the world abroad as well. Recently renovated, the clinical section of the school has been meticulously executed to ensure compliance and to give substance to new research and educational programs.

Dr. Back then updated the Foundation team as to the research status of each of the four recognized genetic flaws (Megaesophagus, Aortic Rupture, Hydrocephalus and Dwarfism) first identified by Utrecht and presented at FHANA’s 2011 AGM in California. Dr. Catherine Delasalle presented new information and video regarding aortic rupture in the Friesian horse.

In addition, Dr. Fox of the Foundation presented her findings pertaining to North American necropsy cases shared with the Foundation as well as ongoing medical issues/trends being addressed here in North America.

We thank Dr. Back and Utrecht University for their hospitality and look forward to the sharing of research for years to come.
